“In view of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, China has inaugurated the new Beijing mega airport, the second in the capital. With its 700,000 square meters, the Beijing-Daxing International Airport is the largest single-building terminal in the world. The construction of the new hub is only the latest of the airport projects with which China aims to become the global leader in air traffic by 2022. As the new terminal for Shenzhen Bao’an (by Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas) and Harbin (by MAD) also show, the new Chinese airports are characterized by a strong symbolic dimension, in which the reference to the forms of nature becomes not only an identity device for the cities where they are located, but also a ploy of legitimation and narrative of the project itself.”
